Mega Millions jackpot climbs to $498,000,000 Tuesday; 2 second prize tickets sold

Tuesday's Mega Millions lottery grand prize grew to $498,000,000, because nobody matched all five white ball numbers plus the Mega Ball number drawn Friday night. The lump-sum cash payout for Tuesday will be $$245.3 million. Friday's $464,000,000 is the total grand prize amount - before taxes - if the prize is taken in annual installments. The winning numbers from Friday night, August 16th, 2024 were 22, 38, 48, 51, 61 and the Mega Ball was 05, Megaplier was 3.

Even though there was no jackpot winner Friday evening, some people still walked away with huge pile of cash. There were 2 lucky players that matched all five numbers and won the second prize. The 2 second prize winning ticket(s) sold in CA,NJ will collect $1,000,000 cash each.

Other prizes won Friday night included 19 tickets that matched 4 white numbers as well as the Mega Ball and won $10,000. Also, 419 tickets matched 4 of the 5 lotto numbers. Those tickets are each worth $500. 1082 tickets matched 3 of the 5 lotto numbers, as well as the Mega Ball number. These tickets are also each worth $200.

With 9 different ways to win, there were 1,830,002 winning tickets sold across the nation in the Friday, August 16th, 2024 drawing.

Mega Millions is played in 43 states and D.C. Approximately 50% of the Mega Millions sales goes back for the players through prize winnings. Approximately 15% goes to retailer commissions and lottery operating costs. Roughly 35% total sales is used in government services, education and charities in the participating states. To play, pick 5 numbers from a set of 70 then select one Mega Ball number from 1 to 25. The minimum Mega Millions advertised grand prize starts at $40 million. The annuity option is paid in 30 equal annual payments. Winners can choose one time lump sum cash payout instead.
