The jackpot for Friday's Mega Millions drawing skyrockets to $221 million

The Mega Millions grand prize has been pumped up to an estimated $221 million (cash value $159.6 million) for the next drawing in the multistate lottery game Friday night. The grand prize amount has been rolled over because nobody matched all six winning numbers to take the $201 million grand prize Tuesday night. The winning numbers from Tuesday night, December 28th, 2021 were 03, 05, 08, 31, 38 with Mega Ball number 04 and Megaplier x3. The Mega Millions grand prize has been growing for 855 draws since Friday, October 4th, 2013.A single lucky winner from Maryland walked away with $189 million grand prize in Tuesday, October 1st, 2013 drawing.
While the grand prize was not hit Tuesday evening, some people still walked away with big money. A total of 35 lucky tickets won the third prize. These included 35 tickets that matched 4 white ball numbers as well as the Mega Ball and won $10,000.
Other winners Tuesday evening included 675 tickets that matched four lotto numbers and won $500. Other prizes won included 1406 tickets that matched 3 white numbers in addition to the Mega Ball and won $200.
There were 129,122 Mega Millions winning tickets sold in the state of New York. There were 64561 grand prize winning tickets sold in the state of New York.
With nine different ways to win, there were 1,493,028 winning tickets sold across the nation in the Tuesday, December 28th, 2021 drawing.
Mega Millions game is played in 43 states and Washington DC. Around 50% of the Mega Millions sales goes back to the players in prize winnings. Approximately 15% goes to retailer commissions and lottery operation expenses. Roughly 35% total sales is used in government services, education and charities in the participating states. Mega Millions uses a 5/70 (white balls) + 1/25 (Mega Balls) matrix from which winning numbers are chosen. Each play costs $1. In some states, players can choose to pay 1 extra dollar to buy the Megaplier option, which multiplies the prizes 2 to 5 times except grand prize. The minimum Mega Millions advertised grand prize starts at 40 million dollar. Its annuity option is paid in 30 equal yearly installments. Winners can choose one lump sum cash payout option instead.
